Learning and Living Green
![]() |
Recently the County unveiled the exciting program, called Learning & Living Green, in partnership with the local school boards. This program increased the acceptable blue box materials, streamlined the sorting of blue box materials in the classroom, and added diversion of organic (green bin) materials. At the County of Simcoe, we recognize that children play a significant role in influencing adult behavior with respect to environmental initiatives. It is felt that a program which is consistent between local school boards and the residential curbside diversion program will motivate increased waste reduction and diversion in the County. |
Another extremely innovative aspect of the program is the development of school curriculum as a practice to communicate information specific to municipal waste management programs. The eco curriculum, provided to kindergarten thru grade 8 teachers via a monthly electronic calendar, includes useful links and activities suitable to each age group. The curriculum also supports the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Shaping Our Schools Shaping Our Future policy document, which outlines that consideration for the environment should be a part of all aspects of the education system.
